Everyone knows that science and technology are the most important keys to taking the lead in the future. The Discovery Center for Science and Technology for Young Scientists communicates the importance of science and technology by reaching out directly to South Korea’s growing young people.

An example of this is the Science Picnic of the Discovery Center for Science and Technology for Young Scientists, which was born in 2002 with the production of an extra-large, mobile science trailer equipped with scientific experimental equipment and cutting-edge imaging equipment based on an idea by Hanyang University's current chairman Kim Jong-ryang, who was serving as the president of the university at that time.

Among the Science Picnic events, “mobile science classes” make use of the trailer to directly visit the elementary, middle, and high schools across South Korea and help the students develop an affinity for science and enhance their scientific literacy. This is also made possible through programming that consists of “science lecture plays,” which combine plays and demonstrations of experiments, and “Hands-on experiment experience classes,” which use independently developed teaching materials for experiments. In addition, by operating various types of integrative science and cultural activities, including science & engineering camps, Christmas science lecture plays, and the Mobile Chemical Museum, we are able to further motivate the youths to learn about science and technology in a more friendly way, helping them grow into talented individuals with the ability to apply their scientific and technological skills in various areas.

Of particular note is that in 2010, we (the Discovery Center for Science and Technology for Young Scientists) became the first to design a “STEAM integrative education model” that conflates science, technology, engineering, art (arts & liberal arts), and mathematics, and subsequently proposed the model as a system for science education in South Korea, which, having since been officially adopted, is leading science education in elementary, middle, and high schools. Through the provision of exciting science experiences, Hanyang University's Science Picnic will guide these students to grow with the ability to apply their skills in various areas based on creative thinking. Lastly, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all university officials for their unbridled material and moral support and to Hanyang University chairman Kim Jong-ryang, for his innovative ideas, passion for education, and commitment to leading this wonderful culture of science education.
